Congratulations to Bree Garrett who just graduated from the MHNE program!
Bree Garrett is the Community Nutrition Coordinator for Jones Valley Urban Farm. She operates the farm’s Seed 2 Plate fieldtrip for children, which teaches them about the food system through a garden lesson, a nutrition lesson and a cooking lesson. She is also co-chair of the Jefferson County Childhood Obesity Taskforce, which allows her to work with policy, the school system, and the community. The taskforce is helping to make improvements in hundreds of children’s lives by getting healthier food into their communities, into their schools and into their homes.
Bree gives lectures to school children, teachers, parents, and community groups. Her focus is teaching the benefits of whole foods and helping people transition from the standard American diet (SAD) to a nutritious, delicious way of eating.
Bree wrote her MHNE thesis on farm to school programs and how they can reverse childhood obesity. In her thesis Bree demonstrated that farm to school programs can positively affect children’s dietary habits, improve the quality and taste of school meals, encourage physical activity and being outside in nature which all have the ability to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. The farm to school approach teaches children where their food comes from and the benefits of a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables. Farm to school programs go beyond schools purchasing local produce for its cafeteria to include nutrition education, planting school gardens, farm tours, and recycling lessons. Connecting the next generation to good quality food and sustainable farming can help the pendulum swing back in the direction of promoting a healthy mindset and healthy lifestyle.
Thank you for this very important work Bree!
For more information about volunteer opportunities with JVUF and the Seed 2 Plate fieldtrip, or getting involved with the Jefferson County Childhood Obesity Task Force, email Bree Garrett at nutrition@jvuf.org.
